The Park

Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the US. In 1857 the wealthy elite of NYC, jealous of the green spaces London and Paris could boast, held a competition to transform the 843 acres of swamp land, at the time home to shanty towns and rubbish dumps, into the vast public oasis that is now both the lungs and the heart of the metropolis.
