What's it all about?
As life whizzes it’s important to stop every once in a while to take stock.
I started The Occasional Press to help people do just that, to celebrate and mark particular passages of time in their family's lives.
I like to think of it as remembering now.
Not just the big occasions either, I mean busy periods when your family is growing infront of your eyes. Be it your babies becoming toddlers, or children becoming adults.
Creating records of these times make priceless keepsakes, and not just for you but for future generations.
Saying 'I Love You'...
I can think of nothing more important than telling the special people in your lives how much you love them and no better way than making a personal gift to say it with.
And a Little bit about Paul...
It’s hard to know when I first wanted to be an artist, it was a chuffing long time ago. As a kid I would walk past the local art school and marvel at a place you could go just to draw.
A school where PE and maths were not spoken of.
My Dad recognised my habit of clinging to the railings and drooling as enthusiasm and started taking me along to his evening art classes at the age of 10.
From said local art school in Wimbledon, to the strange anti-metropolis that is Canterbury where I gained a BA Hons in Fine Art and a Phd in eating £1 noodles.
Once graduated, myself and aforementioned Dad decided it would be fun to try our hand at market trading, and spent a long cold winter in Spitalfields market, attempting to sell our art and photography.
Here we made two very important discoveries; we found the best bacon baps in London and we learnt that people are less interested in art and more amazed by handmade soap – that’s a licence to print money believe me.
Selling art is not easy. I needed some sort of direction, I needed an income, I needed an idea... I know, I thought, I'll go back to college for a year and think about it.
I did a professional photography B-Tech course (It was last century) at the London College of Printing and by varying degrees of luck, hard work and winging it have ended up being a photographer for the last 19 years.
I've built up my own freelance business and shot for many many different clients (I still am and do) and love it.
20 Years of Making Things Up
Throughout all this I've been building up my own visual language and approach to making images.
Now I apply this to the task of helping people create unique gifts for their loved ones.
